William Wells Newell, 1839-1907, Philosophy Professor at Harvard, was a antropoligist and folklorist who studied oral traditions, superstitions, was the founder of "The American Folklore Society" and edited the "Journal of American Folklore" He wrote "Games and Songs of American Children," 1883, which was the first collection of folk music of American children. An earlier edition of this work came out in 1895, published by Charles W. Seaer, with only 1/3 of the words, 200 printed. This copy is quite rare OCLC lists 7 holdings. Signed "To Samuel M. Crothers With the regards of the author & printer Xmzs, 1904. Cream/gilt boards, with tissue paper jacket, 188 pgs, mild foxing, 200 copies printed at Hazelbrook, Wayland, Mass. 16mo - over 5" - 6" tall
